The unwritten rules
The workplace norms nobody puts in the handbook.
The hardest part of a new job is rarely the work. It is the unspoken code: how people really communicate, what feedback means, and which rules are firm versus merely habit. None of it is intuitive, all of it is learnable, and wanting it spelled out is reasonable, not remedial.
- Find the real how, not just the what. In the first weeks, ask how the team prefers to communicate, message or meeting, and how quickly people expect a reply.
- Treat feedback as data, not verdict. Direct correction is usually about the task, not about you. Ask clarifying questions and write the answer down.
- Ask which rules are load-bearing. Some norms matter and some are just habit. A trusted colleague or mentor can tell you which is which.
- Build one steady ally. A single person you can quietly check things with turns an opaque culture into one you can read.
