Accommodations
Make support easy to ask for.
Most accommodations are small, cheap, and quietly transformative. Nearly half cost nothing at all. The barrier is rarely money, it is whether people feel safe to ask.
- Offer the common ones by default. Noise-cancelling headphones, quieter or lower-light space, flexible or remote hours, written instructions, and agendas ahead of meetings.
- Make requesting simple and private. A clear, low-friction path to ask, framed as a normal part of doing good work rather than a special favor.
- Use the free help. The federally funded Job Accommodation Network advises employers, at no cost, on exactly what to put in place.
